Toslink (Toshiba-Link) was initially developed by Toshiba for its CD players. However, the use of this optical fiber connection system is currently not limited to CDs only but can be used to connect satellite dish receivers, DVD players and other equipment. It is a data transmission system that uses optical signals instead of the usual electrical signals thus its more reliable. Toslink has 4 major components: the transmission module that enables conversion of the electrical signals to optical signals. However, the receiving module reconverts the optical signals into electrical signals.

The other components are optical fiber cables that act like the physical transmission lines while the optical connectors enhance the connection of the receiving and transmission modules to the optical fiber cable.

RJ11 Connector

Is it the Right Time for 3G (3rd Generation) Technology?

Before going into the details, let me just clear the terms 1G, 2G, and 3 G. First generation just provided voice facilities to customers where as 2nd generation brought data capabilities such as Short Message Service (SMS) etc. 3G stands for third generation that enables users to access high speed internet, and other services like video calling, gaming, and mobile TV, etc.

With a mobile phone density of over 54 percent and over 90 million mobile users, Pakistan is still behind in the broadband race. PTA claims that at the year end 2009, there will be 50 million broadband users but still it seems that people are not very much interested in using high speed internet. This brings some doubts about 3G as well as the main usage of the 3G is high speed Internet.

Though Telenor, Mobilink, and Ufone consider 3G would be a success in Pakistan and it is the right time to introduce the new technology but at the same time, Warid is not agreeing with them anymore. The reason Warid mentioning is that the price of 3G compatible cellular phone is not inexpensive and the 3G technology would be for some of the people. Also, all the mobile operators believe that the charges depends on the price of license. Higher the price of license, higher will be charges for this service.

PTA is offering only 3 Connections to all 5 mobile operators in Pakistan. According to a PTA official, Pakistan must have this latest technology and it is launched to step ahead in the field of telecom.

All the mobile phone operators are providing excellent services at competitive rates, but do you think that its the right time to introduce a technology like 3G in Pakistan?

My Experience with PTCL Wireless Broadband ‘On the Go’

PTCL Wireless Broadband ‘On the Go’ launched a while ago. I waited for their device that can be connected via the USB Adapters but I could not wait much. Yesterday I went to their office an bought the device that is connected via the PCMCIA adapter. The device manufacturer is Huawei and the Model of the device is EC360-EV-DO. I had to buy a PCMCIA Adapter first to be able to connect the Device with. I will mention the prices at the end the article.

Lets start with the experience. As mentioned on PTCL Website the downloading and uploading speed would be 300-700 KBPS and 200-400 KBPS respectively but…what I experienced was a little shocking. The downloading speed won’t cross 200 KBPS and Uploading speed 50 KBPS. I don’t say that this is the actual speed because I am using the device in my room and weather has been cloudy for couple of days now in Islamabad so, that could be the reason. The speed may increase if I use it on my laptop in open environment but that is not possible. The PCMCIA adapter is not available on my laptop and it is not available in most of the new laptops. So, if you are buying a laptop to use the current device, make sure it has a PCMCIA slot.

The device comes with a Manual, Driver CD ROM, and a headset…You must be thinking why a headset. I thought the same and called up customer support center. She told me that a number is provided with your device which you can use but the Voice Port is not open yet. According to her, it will be open very soon. There is a slot for the headset pin on the device. That’s good, now you can have a PTCL number with you if you have this device. I also asked her about the device for USB Adapter and she told me that it is expected later this month.

Ufone Sucks Big Time – Poor Service Quality and Pathetic Customer Service

Being a loyal customer, I hate to write this but they made me do so. For the past few weeks, Ufone service quality has been pathetic disappointing. I am sure most of you (Ufone users) must be facing the issues I am. Sometimes I just get disconnected from the rest of the world. Can not send messages, can not dial or receive calls.

Today, same happened and I thought of contacting the Customer Support Center. Call connected and was put on hold. I waited for 20 minutes and then the call was disconnected. What the hell??? Why they are charging Rs. 1/- per call to customer center, claiming that this is to provide better customer service but it seems that its a new way of robbery by Telecom Companies. I called again and now 15 minutes so far and no signs of Customer Service Representative. That’s coward. Just let them pick the phone and I will make them regret.
I am porting out. Yes, I can not bear this anymore. Tried to compromise because of the brand association but when brand doesn’t care, why should I? Just help me find a better network and if you are Ufone users, write your comments about the service.

Again 20 minutes and call disconnected.

Edit: Dialed called third time and finally someone picked up and told me that there is some maintenance happening thats why we are facing issues. I asked “Who on earth would intimate customers?” and asked about the last complaint (a week ago) I lodged, he was speechless. I am surely porting out now!
