RJ stands for Registered Jack and refers to a physical connector that is used as an interface for wire terminals used in telephones. It has six connector positions but generally two or four are used. This means that the extra wires can be used for various applications such as grounding selective ringers. The wiring for this connector comes in two varieties. One is the untwisted and the other one is the unshielded twisted pair.

This is one of the most popular registered jacks and is used in a majority of the telephone jacks that have a single line. It is similar to the RJ14 and the RJ25 except that the numbers of lines are different and it has a powered version.
