Virtual University of Pakistan

Today, a friend of mine drew my attention to something that I was ignoring intentionally – Education System of Pakistan. Well… I am not going to discuss this topic here but rather I have chosen a university to discuss about. We have around 124 Universities in Pakistan recognized by Higher Education Commission. The university system I have selected for discussion is Virtual University of Pakistan (VU). I am not really interested in discussing the methodology of VU, rather I will talk about who should and should not apply, scope, and what are the problems exisitng students are facing.

Let me just give you a brief introduction of Virtual University of Pakistan.  VU is the first University of Pakistan which is based on Modern Information and  Communication Technologies, was established by the Government as a public sector, not-for-profit institution with a clear mission: to provide extremely affordable world class education to aspiring students all over the country.

Lets start with Who Should NOT Apply:

  • Who have not enough time to study
  • Who are not self-sufficient

Who Should Apply:

Well I am not going to discuss the eligibility of candidates.

  • Who can give enough time to studies. (VU education methodology is not that easy as it is thought)
  • Who are pro-active and can take initiatives
  • Who can complete their assignments on time.
  • Who want to learn something and avail the distance education facility.
  • Who are Hard Working

Problems Faced by Students:

  • Timings
  • Affiliated Institutions Parking Area
  • Problems During Examinations in Exam Centers (NO ACs/ Heaters etc.)

Scope:

Virtual University, Lahore is recognized by HEC, Pakistan and also by many International Commissions but if you are looking for a job in Pakistan with VU degree, that might lead you for a slight trouble. VU is not very successful in positioning itself as a standard institution rather it is perceived like a sub-standard university which in fact is not truth.

These are my opinions and visitors may or may not agree with me.

Recommendations for Virtual University Pakistan:

  • Students of far far long areas are not yet being targeted.
  • Facilities like ACs, Heaters etc should be provided to all students by making one or two centers in each district.
  • VU is making study tougher and tougher which indeed is not a good policy.

Wow! Zaheer great article! I m still doubtful about the valuation of its degree! some people still think that VU is useless UNI to join for studies

As I have mentioned in my my post about the scope of VU in Pakistan. There is little awareness of long distance studies. And I think that it’s a mistake on VU part that they failed to position the institute as it should have been.

We in Pakistan are more interested in Degree rather then education and this is what our System Taught us but if you are learning just because you want not because you want to get a job in Pakistan, it’s a best option to do so just by sitting right in your home.

Ist of all I really appreciate Mr. Zaheer efforts regarding a brief intro of Virtual University Pakistan. But still I find this article is not based on facts. As I done my BSCS & MBA from VU & I didn’t see any of such problems mentioned in this article. I visited LHR, KHI & RWP PVC’s they all equipped with A/c & heaters. Labs are quipped with latest PC’s Plus Wireless Lan Connection.

2ndly regarding timing a VU student is not bound of timing he/she can take virtual classes via Virtual television i.e VTV1, VTV2, VTV3, VTV4 and also through DVD’s provided by VU at affordable prices.

Regarding Job Placement again it’s beyond the fact my all friends & batch mates are placed at multinationals, semi Private & governmental organizations. I myself enhanced my entrepreneurial/managerial skills only through studying at VU. Moreover for your kind information there is a Job portal initiated by VU in alliance with Rozee Pk (a leading Pakistani Job Portal) you can check the website http://vu.rozee.pk/. Where only VU students are entertained.

Education at VU is really a world-class as we can see same modules in LUMS, Yale, MIT & Howard. Instructors hired by VU are selected from Pakistani topnotch universities. That Includes Famous Assembly Teacher of NUST sir Bilal “Baoo Ji” there are many more.. Also read this:
“The ranking of top 100 universities belonging to the subcontinent was released by CCHS-CSIC, Spain, according to its “Webometrics Ranking of World Universities. In the subcontinent at least 16 Pakistani universities are on the list of top 100 universities. Out of which the Virtual University is ranked 10th. This reflects the growing awareness of the University. VU is engaged in providing international quality education in every corner of the country including the far flung areas by best faculty available in the country at a very affordable fee”

Few Days Back I requested VU Rector Hon. Naveed. A. Malik for initiating SAP courses in VU MBA program and I am very pleased with his reply that he will take notice of this and soon inshallah work will be started on this.

Also VU is making its education strict and tougher. We as a student favor this VU act. As we feel that this will improve VU standard. Latest Learning Management System, Student can make their own date sheet http://datesheet.vu.edu.pk and Improved Online Quiz System refers to this improvement.

Students like Ali Raza making VU proud. He is
only Pakistani Guy over Adobe Official Flex Showcase http://www.flex.org/showcase According to Ali Raza he achieved this achievement only due to VU CS (Programming) Lectures.

I am glad that you came to my website and clarified a lot of things up. But, as I saw on your Orkut Forum, people are taking my article negatively which I think they are not supposed to. I don’t think I wrote anything against the VU system or its degree evaluation. 80% of my article is in favor of VU, although there were some confusions as honestly I could not see a person from VU on a higher rank, and I know thats not truth, its just me (thank you for your clarification).

I have not deleted you post and that would be unethical if I do so. All the comments go to moderation queue to control the SPAMs. I have approved your detailed comment and you can see it on my website. I would request you to post my email to your Orkut forum to discourage the hater and biasness which might arise.

Thank you for writing at ZaheerSpeaks.com and I would appreciate if you sometime come on my website and write a few words.

My Dear Zaheer my members are not against your article. I do respect your thoughts and i am very thankful to you that you lime light importance & discrepancies of our university(VU).

One thing i will assure you in coming years VU will be ranked in Top Notch universities of Pakistan. As VU is equipped with best infrastructure.

And ppl who says VU degree is not recognized i only say one word, On our transcript a Govt Logo Appears so how is it possible that our degree is not valuable.

Thank u again for your reply and support.

Thats a great article right there Zaheer, being a VU BSIT student myself I see nothing wrong with your post, infact with a little research you could have highlighted a few more issues faced by VU students. The image of the university is the admin’s responsibility and advertising good things about it is one way of improving that.
There are a lot of misconceptions about VU and I too was a bit apprehensive before joining it but i had a dislocated knee and rather than wasting a year, i thought of giving it a try, and so far its been a great experience. The teachers hired by VU are world class and the lectures are exceptionally well delivered, I got a friend to get my lecture videos and slides copied on a Hard disk from a private campus along with the lecture handouts and even though it takes a helll lot of a motivation to sit down and play a video lecture i still manage it somehow…
Whatever interaction Ive had with course instructors on the VULMS (VU learning management system) and VU staff through email and on phone has been a pleasant experience to say the least. The response is prompt and they never keep you waiting. The best part is that VU is continuously striving for improvement, things like online quizzes, facility to choose exam center, city and creating one’s own date sheet to name a few need to be appreciated.. Regarding the condition of campuses, the private ones are pretty shabby, considering the fact that exams are now being conducted ‘online’ the computers in these campuses need drastic upgrades..the least they could do is attach new keyboards!!lol VU admin should actually visit a campus before assigning it the private virtual campus status. VU’s own campus in Rawalpindi atleast, is pretty well equipped – the staff and invigilators at all campuses though are helpful and all very nice ppl :) ..
VU also need to ensure that transmission of VU network is available all over the country. They keep having these surveys and i keep telling them that not a single VU tv channel is available in pindi (which is supposed to be one of the big cities) primarily because of lack of interest on the cable operators’ part. But VU hasnt done anything about it so far, maybe they should make it mandatory for all cable operators to tune VU channels right after PTV :p
..other than that thumbs up to VU and our rector!

Thankful to all of you. I would like to mention a little bit, am aslo a student of VU,no doubt VU is best university and it learning management is excellent. Those who work hard definately get their reward. Those who do,t work hard get D grade. It is well established and maintained. Gone are the day when organization looks degrees from good institutions now skills are more important and if U have skills Degrees and jobs will come to U. Thanks

To all readers that VU is of course best university as i am student of VU and currently in 8th semester. i don’t want to convience any one that take admission at VU but i would like to say that if you think that you know a subject very well enven you are a teacher of that subject then buy the DVD of that subject from VU and listen these lectures. After listening these lectures you will come to know how best VU is. i always pray for VU staff. and the pakistani instructors those make VU education best.

If u need to understand VU just get admission there I bet u need more time to study there subjects as compared to any top class university of the country.
Look at there curriculum, subjects. Change management,Knowledgemanagement etc.

Going to campus and visiting class rooms is an old idea to check for competancy. In modern world more competancy means more knowledge and for that u need to do hard work a lot. VU is one that makes u feel u r chewing iron nuts while studing in VU.

Good luck if u take good grades in VU. If below 2.3 u can’t get degree.

June 18, 2009

I agree with Miss ansari if u have the capability of getting something, U just prove urself by your own not being dependent on on others as your friends or else to take lessons from them get notes and rote it. In VU you have to conceptualize every thing and you have to get to the bottom of every aspect that’s how you can study, and it is the real concept of study

Mr. Amir no issue at all in vu case, university will allow you to improve your grades by not appearing full (like punjab university) but only low scoring subjects.

Thanks in advance.

Assalam u Alaikum: I studied the comments about the vu. I am also one of the students in MBA. I am a full time employee and getting hard enough time for such activities especially to prepare for study to improve someone’s professional capabilities. I experienced the VU and found it is simply “THE BEST”. I am also studying for Chartered Accountancy exams. But the vu way of education is convenient, cool, calm, digestable, achievable and getable the required knowledge at someone’s own convenience. DVD lectures are simply the best. I request to the VU authorities to plz add some professional courses also like CA, ACCA, CFA, ACMA make this nation more competitive in the international workforce. Plz also add some courses like MSC economics, Statistics etc. I wish for VU to be more successful in future.

Dear Brother Syed Mehboob Ali Shah sb, Assalam u Alaikum, You can get the handouts as well as the lecture cds’ by purchasing them directly from the university. For this, you have to visit: http://bookshop.vu.edu.pk/. Go there, create your user id and get password and then you can lodge your order. It is important to mention here that a vu student as well as the non student can equally be benefited from Lecture CDs and other material of VU. And thats really the great facility of VU. I pray to Allah to bless the university progress as higher as mucher. With regards.

Dear Mr Mehboob Ali Shah sb, Assalam u Alaikum: Hopefully, you will be well there. First of all, plz make me understand for what “MTO” stands for? As I have searched through web, and found different usage of this abbreviation in certain situations. If you mean it as “Management Trainee Officer”, then the best course will be is “Specialization in Human resource management”. If you can do a further specialization in “Management” & “Banking & Finance” you will be more favorable for the banking sector job. With regards

I am currently in my MBA final year at VU. the good side of VU is its affordable yet reputed and recognized university. The registrars and higher management is very very cooperative with students. Now the bad side, The MBA program at V.U is somehow very stupid when you r forced to learn all the JAVA Script HTML Stuff being a business student, whereas there r many easy to use tools for webpage designing.

Well some arguements are true 4m Mr. Zaheer but there are some points i might disagree with a little. As far as the concept that getting job after having a VU degree is concerned i would rather say its doesn’t seem a trouble to me yet. I’ve personally come across many students of VU who are at a respective designations in different firms and companies. Infact i think a VU graduate student has a clear benefit over other students that he/she has a vast knowledge and command over different fields much more comparatively to other institutional students, just because they are taught in their study time period to enhance their mind and other skills all by themselves.

Simply there is no place for dump and dull minds in VU.Its not just a distant learning university but a modern university of 21st century. old concepts of class room studies are obsolete in this modernistic world. Knowledge is not gain in class but is gained by effective ways and no doubt VU has a lead in that over national universities.
